- Three Types Of Pressure Washer Drives -

What type of pressure washer is right for you? Gasoline powered pressure washers have the advantage of putting out more horsepower than electic units, and they are portable. Gas units have 3 different types of drive systems; direct drive, gear drive, and belt drive.

In direct drive units, the pump is connected directly to the engine. This means that the pump spins at the same speed as the engine, usually around 3400 RPM. This system has the advantage of being simple, therefore less expensive. These units are usually more popular for this reason. However, the one big disadvantage is that the bearings in the pump get more wear and tear. The bottom line is, the faster that the pump rotates, the shorter its life span.

Gear drive systems reduce pump speed by means of a gear box between the pump and the engine. This increases the pump life by saving wear and tear on the bearings.

Belt-drive units use pulleys and belts to slow the speed of the pump. While the engine spins at 3400 RPM, the pump will be slowed to around 1400 RPM depending on the pulley and belt set up. The pump is also removed from the heat and vibration of engine. All other things being equal, this system should provide for the longest pump life.

Overall, the life of the pump is going to be determined by the way it is used and treated. Exposing the unit to adverse conditions will ultimately affect how long the pump lasts in actual conditions, no matter what type of engine/pump set up you have.
